Terry Freedman's Profile: Summary of Experience and Past Employment

Terry Freedman

Based in the UK, Terry Freedman has nearly thirty years' experience in education. Specialising in information and communication technology (ICT), he has taught in inner city schools, been Head of Department, worked at the Qualification and Curriculum Authority (a non-departmental government body) and held a 3rd tier officer post -- Head of E-Education -- in a London local education authority (LEA). He is also an Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education) inspector for ICT and Business Education, has worked with the private sector on devising ICT courses and bidding for government funds, and advises schools and LEAs on educational technology matters.

In his spare time, Terry is currently the Chair of the Executive committee of the advisory body, Naace, in which capacity he has edited British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (Becta) newsletters for ICT teachers. Terry has also been the Communications Chair of the Admin special interest group in the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), and is a member of the British Computer Society, having previously been invited to join the British Computer Society’s Schools Experts Panel.

He is a Mirandanet Fellow, has been an e-mentor, and has been a trainer for SLICT (Strategic Leadership in ICT) and an assessor for NaaceMark, a quality assurance seal of approval for schools and other bodies, which formed the basis of the ICT Mark, for which Terry is also an accredited assessor. He is also a Becta-accredited trainer in the Framework for ICT Support (FITS). In addition, he sits on the advisory boards of a number of companies.

A prolific writer, Terry has had some 3000 articles published in periodicals such as the Times Educational Supplement, Managing Schools Today and educ@guardian, as well as about a dozen books. He is a member of the UK's Society of Authors.

Terry maintains his own website http://www.ictineducation.org, which was approved for National Grid for Learning and Virtual Teachers Centre badging, is linked to by the Department for Education and Skills as part of its  Cutting Bureaucracy Toolkit, has achieved the Mirandanet Site of the Month Award and was the featured website in a recent edition of ICT for Education, as well as being acclaimed in the Times Educational Supplement. Terry also publishes an e- newsletter, Computers in Classrooms, which is read widely by headteachers, teachers, advisors and other ICT "champions", both in the UK and abroad, and provides a paid-for subscription service for original and high-quality advice in ICT.
